SPECIALS

Everyone loves a deal and have we got the deals for you! But seriously, we look to make our trade in components, demonstration stock and specials from suppliers as good a value propositions as you can get. We’ve just updated our listings with a series of components and even cables, so scroll down and see what’s on offer…

Trade in – NuPrime DAC-10 DAC/preamplifier $1850. And ST10 stereo power amplifier $2000.

Both in beautiful black and traded in on the flagship Evolution DAC and One mono power amplifier models.NuPrime DAC-10 and ST-10 at Totally Wired

It’s always a good sign when clients stay with a brand when upgrading – obviously they have enjoyed their components enough to want to enjoy even more of what is on offer. Up until just last year (and in fact last December for the DAC) these were NuPrime’s best products and still remain so in their particular price area.

The DAC-10 is a digital and analogue multi-tasker – it’s both DAC and preamplifier with remote control, RCA and balanced outputs, switchable gain and most importantly class leading sound.

The ST-10 is physically small and cool running but don’t let that fool you – this particular unit replaced a massive Plinius SA-103. The NuPrime proved to be more powerful (150 watts per channel), better sounding in all aspects, much quieter and user friendly to boot. Despite costing around half of what the Plinius originally sold for. To gain an appreciable improvement over the ST-10, our client has stretched to the Evolution Ones.

Separately or together these are easy choices for the budget conscious but aspirational music lover – check out the Absolute sound review here. And a highly detailed review of the ST-10 here.

Both are still current models – here are the NuPrime site listings for the DAC-10 and ST-10

And of course our own take on these components.

Sonus faber Chameleon T floor standing loudspeaker system – now from just $2700 including side panels

We always come back to Sonus faber. While I’ve written screeds on the new Monitor Audio models and appreciate their undeniable performance, there is just something about every speaker Sonus faber design that sounds ‘right’.

Chameleon_T_Walnut_1024x1024.jpg

It’s all in the voicing – Sonus faber excel in making speakers that sound natural. Add to this the undeniably Italian sense of aesthetics and finish and you have the receipt for endless hours of pleasurable listening.

The Chameleon range is effectively entry level Sonus faber but the floor standing ’T’ model is no compromise. It’s a big speaker with 4 drivers, a cavernous front port and the obvious intention to fill living spaces with full rich sound. The lower price on these speakers is simply a promotion to clear space for the recently arrived Sonetto range which are the next level up again – the smallest Sonnetto floor stander – the VI – goes for $7000 so that’s what you have to spend to get better.

We have two pairs in stock and the choice of either walnut or red side panels. Both sets are new,  and the last will be our display pair.

From the foundations of the bass, the Chameleon’s are a tremendously lucid and engaging speaker – perfect from making live recordings actually sound alive, be they large orchestral pieces or something a little more full-on. Sonus faber speakers are full of character and the Chameleon Ts are no exception – while they will tick all the serious audiophile boxes there is a lot more to music than analysis and strict accuracy. We love our own Sonus fabers because they flesh out recordings, transmitting some real emotion and adding something that we just don’t hear with other brands. And that’s why we think you’ll enjoy these speakers so much.

Despite being a comparatively big speaker they are very easy to deal with in terms of room placement and amplifier matching – even a modest amplifier will sound just great with them and there are no issues with using them in home cinema systems.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Walnut or red – it’s your choice.

While the port makes it look like these speakers would be bass heavy, in practice this is not the case – they are well balanced and easy. That said, if you have the luxury of some serious power to put into them they literally take off.

Finish options – choose from red gloss side panels – $2700 inclusive, or walnut veneer panels at $3000.

Original pricing – NZ$5000 with coloured panels, $6000 with Walnut.

Quad 12L2 speakers – Trade in – $500 the pair.

Quad enthusiasts are almost a breed apart and the hardest task I ever have to perform is  try to get them out of their 40 and 50 year old amplifiers into something a little more modern. And of course the Quad Electrostatic speakers are the stuff of legend.images.jpg

Their more conventional box speakers are no less special and are perfect if you’re after a warmer and richer sound. The 12L2s are the larger of the shelf or stand mount models and originally sold for around $1300 the pair.

The set we have were traded in on the new Monitor Audio Studio and are an absolute snip at just $500 the pair in a gloss black finish – they do have a couple of wee marks which is why the price is so low but are otherwise sounding beautiful. Perfect as either an introduction to better quality entry level speakers or as a second set in another room.

Full packaging included so shipping anywhere is easy.

New – Optoma NuForce MCA 18 – 8 channel Power amplifier $1200 (was $1795)

The NuForce Home Cinema components were (and still are) quite unique in their uncompromised sound quality and simplicity of design.

The Optoma NuForce MCA-18 is effectively 4 stereo amplifiers in a single box – the modules used are based on the well proven STA-100 stereo power amplifier and it’s all run by a single high capacity switched mode power supply – there is a huge amount of real power here is a surprisingly slim and cool running box.MCA18-lg.jpg

The sound is classic NuForce – rich and detailed. Even just two of the eight channels running in stereo are hard to beat. There are 4 primary uses for this power amplifier – and you can also combine them…

1. Stereo music and bi-amping. If you have bi-wired speakers it’s easy to use 4 of the 8 channels into a single pair of speakers. Some speakers can even be tramped which is better again.

2. Multi-room. If you have 4 rooms with 4 pairs of speakers and the cables all coming back to a single point, this is your amplifier. Teams with either 4x Apple Airports Express units or even better 4x D-Stream Primos HDs for wicked whole house sound and full control via your smart phone.

3. Oppo and Cambridge Blueray players – most of these have multiple analogue outputs and remote volume control so you can combine the MCA-18 directly with them and enjoy sparkling and powerful home cinema with up to 8 separate speakers.

4.  Upgrading most home theatre receivers – AVRs (Audio Video Receivers) are almost without fail have power amplifier sections are horribly compromised in both sound quality and real power. If yours has pre out sockets – many do – you can add the NuForce MCA-18 and experience and instant and substantial upgrade.

The ‘Optoma NuForce’ branding reflects the newer generation of this amplifier as Optoma have purchased a large chunk of the Nuforce line – cinema and earphone products while the higher end section has become NuPrime (yes, it’s confusing). Even more so with NuPrime now introducing a new and more costly line of multichannel amplifier options – the MCX series which are very much based on the work originally done with the MCA-18.

This amplifier is sold as new.

KLEI High End Analogue interconnects.

Some clients just can’t help themselves and once the experience Keith Eichmann’s amazing cables they just keep going up the range to get even better performance – we’ve got two sets of 1m interconnects that have come in and although I’m just as happy to keep them in our own system, we really should put them out there again.

KLEI interconnect cable @totallywirednz
KLEI interconnect cable

The zFlow33s are the predecessor  of the current zPurity88 interconnectsthey have a huge rich sound – it’s immediately obvious that they are substantially better than our new stock Purity 8s which go for NZ$2000 the pair. The combination of better Harmony plugs and a visibly more complex and heavier construction make this so. In short, there is only one better sounding cable we have ever heard – the KLEI zPurity 888s which is what trade in has enabled.

You can have these fantastic cables – fully run in and in excellent condition for just $1800 a pair.

We also have a trade in set of the gZero10s are still a current KLEI model, again replaced by the Purity 888s. We normally have ’10s pegged at NZ$1600 including GST. Still a fantastic cable by anyone’s standards – one pair only at $995.

Monitor Audio Bronze 1 and 2 speakers.

The perennial best buy speaker in the UK, Monitor Audios Bronze series share much of the technology of the more upmarket Silver and Gold series but put it all in a cost effective and great sounding package – you get all metal C-Cam drivers, a convincing faux walnut cabinet finish.Image result for monitor audio Bronze 2

For some reason I’m great at selling the top end Monitor Audio but I suck at the entry level. So rather than have these sitting here new in the box you, or someone you know, should be enjoying themThis shouldn’t be the case because the Bronze 2’s are an especially good speaker by any standards – the classic ported mid sized two way design does pretty much even thing you could want – great bass, clear vocals and a good dollop of excitement when you need it. The smaller 1s aren’t too far behind and are actually better for smaller rooms and tight shelves.

Bronze Twos – $500 (normally $750) the pair

Bronze Ones – $400 (normally $600) the pair.

All sets sold as new with full 5 year warranty.

Monitor Audio WT-150 LCR in walls. These are very cool in-walls. Much like my favourite Monitor Audio speaker – the Studio, these have the d’Apolito layout with bass/mid drivers on either side and a central tweeter – all metal coned C-Cam drivers. This system is great for projecting sound out into the room and it’s very much a truism that two are better than one when it comes to bass drivers. The performance is right up there with the Bronze 2s we’ve just detailed.

One pair only at $600 (normally $900 the pair)

Monitor Audio Gold GXW15 Subwoofer – demonstration unit $2,000 (5G replacement $5250) – also includes a free pure Silver SlinkyLinks subwoofer cable.

monitor_audio_Gold_GXW-15sub.jpgWant big bass? Like 15 inches of serious metal cone driver with 650 watts of pure grunt behind it in a back-breaking but perfectly finished walnut cabinet. Have we got the subwoofer for you…

The Monitor Audio Gold series GXW15 DSP subwoofer is a unique beast. The massive 15″ metal CCAM bass driver cone is lighter than most, and when intelligently driven by the DSP (Digital Signal Processing)amp  which corrects and optimises performance, it is considerably faster and more subtle than you might imagine.

But 650 watts of power efficient Class D amplifier carries a fearsome punch. With automated setup backed up by fine tuning via remote control and an easy to understand menu and display system, you can really make the most of the GXW15.

Behind the intimidating specification and undeniable impact which will impress the most demanding surround sound enthusiast and bass freaks, the Monitor Audio subwoofer is brilliant for music; it can easily be integrated with many quality stereo speakers, both shelf, stand or floor standing. The speed and control makes sure it never sounds overblown. You’ll thrill to  true full range sound and the power added to your system with greatly improve dynamic performance.

The replacement new Gold 5G subwoofer has just been introduced at $5250.

Eichmann eXpress AC power cable 2m – trade in $250

This was the cable that started our ongoing relationship with Keith Eichmann – who now trades under the KLEI banner. It was the very first AC cable I’d heard that actually made an obvious and worthwhile improvements and I still can’t get over how many we sold – more to the point they are all still in use and while we have moved on to new and better versions, this MK2 model still delivers the goods.

ETI eXpress Power AC enhancing cable

I wrote lots about it here over 10 years ago and everything said then is just as valid today. If you can’t make it to our new KLEI AC cables which start at $500 for a 1m, this is the perfect way to at least get a good chunk of the magic.
